Hairdressing and Beauty in Asia Part 7: Coloring workshop in Indonesia ①

• February 24, 2023

A story about a hair coloring workshop in Indonesia

When I was in charge of overseas sales before Corona, I was promoting a new fashion color agent from a certain manufacturer. Every beauty salon on Hot Pepper suggested “English/American like hair color”, and the manufacturer promote ash colors in full line-up and good color with full confidence. In November during COSMOPROF ASIA HONG KONG, I had a business meeting with an Indonesian distributor in Hong Kong and received an order for almost all colors. And the distributor requested,

“Bring the manufacturer’s instructor to Indonesia for a training session.”

With the order in hand, negotiations with the manufacturer were smooth.

Three months after receiving the order, the workshop was scheduled to be held in Indonesia in February.
The content and progress of the workshop was assembled by the manufacturer, and Japanese materials was prepared in advance.
The materials were translated into English and then sent to Indonesia to be translated into Indonesian.
The course lasted for two days, and in addition to the coloring course, we also added a short course on perms.
The Indonesian interpreter translated what the instructor said in Japanese on the spot.
Since the translation was not instantaneous, it took twice as long to convey one message.
We had to calculate that time backwards, and we also have to carefully plan a timetable that includes the time for each model.

On the day of the event, we rehearsed at the venue from early in the morning, checked models and made preparations, and finally at the start time 10:00 a.m., I didn’t know the reason why the number of participants was sparse.

The organizers didn’t seem to be in any particular hurry.

The salesman from the agency smiling, “We’ll get together sooner or later.”
No announcement that the start would be delayed.
No frustration from students who arrived before the start.

The course started with the seats filled to some extent in about 20 minutes.
This progression would never, ever happen in Japan.

I felt the generosity of the people in this country.

Unexpected progression still to come out of this!

I’ll leave it at that for now.

I will be back for the sequel soon.
